Explore Our Green Practices

Carbon Neutrality

For years, we've been taking steps to reduce our effect on the environment through sustainable farming practices, solar power and fish friendly farming. In October 2009, our winery and vineyards achieved carbon neutral status. As a member of The Climate Registry, we calculate and report emissions of the winery and vineyard greenhouse gases, allowing us to continually reduce and offset those emissions.

Solar Power

In October 2003, we installed one of the largest solar electric systems in the wine world. The 766Kw system at Rodney Strong Vineyards generates enough energy to power almost 800 homes and has reduced our dependence on the power grid by 35%. Over 25 years, it will cut emissions of carbon dioxide – a major factor in global warming – by 8,700 tons.

Fish Friendly Farming®

Fish Friendly Farming aims to conserve and improve riparian areas along permanent and seasonal waterways in and along our vineyards. From restoration and revegetation of our creeksides to water conservation and erosion prevention, this voluntary program preserves fish populations, protecting and improving them for future generations. Twelve of our estate vineyards are certified Fish Friendly.

Sustainable Farming

We sustainably farm all of our 14 estate vineyards in Sonoma County. Our farming techniques preserve and replenish the ecosystem – soil, water, air and wildlife – and ensure productivity for future generations. Drip irrigation, cover crops, integrated pest management, composting and leaving sensitive areas undeveloped prevents erosion, reduces pollution and maintains the natural balance of the land.
